Need some light without electricity or matches?
Light sticks are the solution. How exactly do they work? They work based on a
chemical reaction usually between hydrogen peroxide and phenol oxalate ester.
The wall of the stick is also coated with a dye which is responsible for the
color of the light.
Commonly the hydrogen peroxide is inside a glass vial which
is surrounded by the phenyl oxalate ester. Upon tapping or bending the light
stick the glass vial breaks and a chemical reaction takes place between hydrogen
peroxide and ester which releases energy that is absorbed by the dye and the
light is released.
